PF Universal Variable
Originally designed in 2002 but never before released online, Universal is a variable geometric typeface and Parachute's tribute to a design legacy of unprecedented influence. PF Universal takes its cues from the influential works of designers such as Herbert Bayer and Jan Tschichold —both highly significant figures in visual culture. Bayer, a Bauhaus teacher himself, embraced the spirit of reductive minimalism and experimented with the creation of a simplified more phonetic-based alphabet. From 1925 to 1930, he worked on the design of a geometric sans-serif proposal for a Universal typeface that existed only as a design and was never actually cast into real type.
Inspired by his "universal alphabet" concept that consisted of lowercase characters only, PF Universal features caps and improvements for a crystal clear visual outcome expanding Bayer's theme. PF Universal follows the creative mindset of those seminal designers and scholars whilst elaborating on their creative approach with subtle improvements. Plain to the max, the typeface achieves the highest possible legibility even when applied in text, bearing a rigid geometry that encapsulates the Bauhaus' and New Typography's fundamental design values which brought graphics to the forefront of the artistic avant-garde in Central Europe.
Included in our 2003 award-winning catalog the typeface was recently revisited, updated, and enhanced with full support for Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. PF Universal is available as variable font as well as a family with six separate weights.
