PF Das Grot Variable

Awards

In the realm of grotesque typefaces, you'll find a spectrum of styles. Some carry a subtle, unassuming charm, radiating simplicity and restraint. On the other hand, there are those that burst forth with exceptional expressiveness, rendering them the perfect pick for artistic and creative uses. And then there are typefaces, like PF Das Grot, that manage to strike an ideal balance, offering just the right amount of expressiveness for corporate applications.

Das Grot draws its inspiration from early nineteenth-century grotesques but finds its closest kinship with American gothic designs, particularly those pioneered by M.F. Benton. Unlike most grotesque typefaces, which often feature stark, geometric structures leading to a somewhat monotonous and lifeless appearance, Das Grot defies convention. It embodies the ideals of modern design, infusing liveliness and character into its letterforms.

What truly sets Das Grot apart are its unique characteristics. At larger sizes, it demands attention with its distinctive features, yet it gracefully assumes a more subtle and harmonious presence at smaller sizes, fostering a neutral identity. This versatility makes it an exceptionally legible and space-saving typeface. It was thoughtfully designed with slanted curved ends and sheared terminals artfully applied to several straight strokes. Additionally, it offers two-story 'a' and 'g' glyphs while also including single-story alternates.

Originally introduced in 2013, this new variable family is a reinvigorated version, enhanced with narrow and condensed styles, including true italics. It provides seamless support for Latin, Cyrillic and Greek scripts whilst it boasts a plethora of advanced typographic features, including small caps.
