Cinematography - The Voice of Typography
On the occasion of the release of our first variable typeface PF Grand Gothik, Parachute Typefoundry invites you to explore the relation between typography and cinematography with a presentation by Typical Organization and a poster exhibition.
Since the beginning of the history of cinematography in the silent film era, before the invention of talking pictures in the 1920s, typography has had an essential meaning-conveying role in cinema. Taking this as a starting point, Typical Organization will propose a draft reflection, with visual references, on the heritage of the use of type in moving pictures. At the same time, current technological developments in type design and the new era of variable typefaces raise questions on the relation between typography and notions of movement. In this context, Parachute Typefoundry will re-examine and re-interpret traditional associations between letterforms and movement, while navigating the possibilities generated by the variable font technology. For that evening only, an installation/exhibition of typographic posters will be held at Typeroom, blurring the boundaries between moving pictures and type on paper.
