Recently, D&AD invited Panos Vassiliou, who was appointed President of the Type Design Competition, to write an article on how typography affects the visual language of a brand. Here, in a few sentences, you will find out how typography has become the star of the visual communications industry and why it is so important for your company to invest in its own custom typeface.
A bespoke typeface elevates a brand's identity. But sometimes it is the financial benefit of going bespoke that really, truly, matters.
OUR STUDIO
Parachute® is more than a type foundry. It is an experimental space, a typographic playground expressed in a design studio, showroom and concept store under one roof with our creative hub Typeroom®. A place to experiment, play and create. Our team is a small visionary group of type designers, graphic designers, font engineers and copywriters who have effectively collaborated with leading international organizations to incorporate complex custom type design into their brand’s strategic plan and convey their message in style. We use the power of typography to transform living brands to global brands and local leaders to next-generation global leaders. Our work has earned numerous accolades with top honours from TDC, Red Dot, European Design Awards, Tokyo TDC, HiiiBrand, German Design Awards, Communication Arts and many others.

Saving $$$ with Custom Typefaces
The licensing part of a retail typeface is a complicated process. Quite often, users ignore how much it costs to stay legal when they purchase a retail off-the-shelf font license. In recent years, the proliferation of different types of media has brought about the need for a variety of licenses. From desktop workstations to websites, mobile apps or 3rd-parties, most design projects demand a typeface to streamline and solidify a brand. Companies, particularly those corporations that are required to purchase a number of these licenses for hundreds of services and users, pay a lot for licensing fees. The significant cost of buying an off-the-shelf typeface with all the required licenses may reach in many cases an upper six-figures number.
On the other hand, going bespoke is a far more economic option particularly for a medium to a large size corporation. As Quartz reports, IBM has freed itself from the tyranny of Helvetica and in doing so, saved over one million dollars per year in licensing fees. IBM eventually developed its own custom typeface, a clean slate gain in visual and financial terms.
The previous case study indicates that companies may save a substantial amount of money by commissioning a custom typeface. In fact, in most cases the cost is a fraction of that spent for licensing a retail typeface. Bespoke design is smart, sustainable, and business speaking, pure, eligible profit.
